When Hubdoc makes sense

Hubdoc shines for clients with recurring bills from large, portal-connected suppliers. If a client pays the same utility company, telecom provider, or software subscription every month, Hubdoc can log in and fetch those documents automatically without manual upload.

It's tightly integrated with Xero and QuickBooks Online, which makes it a natural fit if your clients already use one of those platforms. When it works, it reduces the document collection step almost entirely for covered suppliers.

The constraint is coverage: Hubdoc only works with suppliers that have web portals it can connect to. One-off vendors, trades contractors, international suppliers, and any business without a supported portal fall outside what Hubdoc handles.

When SkipEntry makes sense

SkipEntry handles the invoices Hubdoc can't: PDFs that arrive by email, invoices from vendors without web portals, scanned paper invoices, and any document you already have as a file. If a client has invoices from dozens of different suppliers, each with their own format, SkipEntry processes them all without setup.

  • One-off vendor invoices not connected to any portal
  • Trades and construction suppliers (electricians, plumbers, contractors)
  • International suppliers without Hubdoc-supported portals
  • Scanned paper invoices from any source
  • Situations where you need full line item extraction, not just totals
  • Clients with many varied suppliers and no consistent portal coverage

Many bookkeepers use both: Hubdoc for recurring portal-connected bills, SkipEntry for everything else. There's no overlap — they cover different parts of the same problem.
